Higher amounts of Triglycerides in the blood directly correlate to a greater risk for heart disease. A host of factors contribute to high triglycerides in the blood. These include a family history of heart disease and high cholesterol, smoking, being obese and overweight, being diabetic, leading a sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy food habits, etc.
High triglycerides in the blood do not cause any symptoms and hence a blood test is the only way to know if a person has high cholesterol or high triglycerides.
Triglycerides is a type of fat and is the major source of energy for the body. In our body, most of the triglycerides is found in the adipose tissue where it is stored as fat and a small amount circulates in the blood and acts as fuel for muscles to work. Immediately post a meal, the levels of triglycerides in the blood go up as the body converts energy that is not needed in to fat. This is then moved to the adipose tissue for storage. Throughout the day, triglycerides move from adipose tissue and used as energy by the body. The triglycerides circulate in the blood by lipoproteins called as VLDL also referred as very low density lipoprotein.
