A qualitative test used to detect Hepatitis b surface antigen in serum. it is the first serological marker to be detected at approximately 6-16 weeks after HBV infection. in typical HBV infection HBsAg will be detected 2-4 weeks before the liver enzymes become abnormal and 3-5 weeks before patient develops jaundice. in acute cases HBsAg generally disappears 1-2 months after onset of symptoms. persistance of HBsAg beyond 6 months is indicative of either chronic Hepatitis or carrier state. current assay used to detect HBsAg is highly sensitive and a positive result needs to be confirmed by neutralization test i.e. HBsAg confirmatory test.
