Creatinine is a chemical waste product in the blood that passes through the kidneys to be filtered and eliminated in urine. The chemical waste is a by-product of normal muscle function. The amount of creatinine that is produced differs from person to person due to body size or muscle mass. Therefore, normal creatinine levels vary in men, women and children. Levels of creatinine in the blood reflect both the amount of muscle a person has and their amount of kidney function.

Normally, your kidneys filter creatinine from your blood and send it out of the body in your urine. If there is a problem with your kidneys, creatinine can build up in the blood and less will be released in urine. If blood and/or urine creatinine levels are not normal, it can be a sign of kidney disease.

Creatinine, serum test:

A creatinine test is a measure of how well your kidneys are performing their job of filtering waste from your blood by measuring creatinine levels in blood and/or urine.

A measurement of creatinine in your blood or urine provides clues to help your doctor determine how well the kidneys are working.

Creatinine blood tests are usually performed along with several other laboratory tests, including a blood urea nitrogen (BUN) test and a basic metabolic panel (BMP) or comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP). These tests are done during routine physical exams to help diagnose certain diseases and to check for any problems with your kidney function
